Phil Hill, editor of this
web page
In August 2006, an article of mine
on the Battle in the Teutoburg Forest appeared in the
weekend magazine section of the Berlin daily Tageszeitung
(TAZ). The German version, available here, is also still
accessible as a link on with the TAZ web page.
The article consists of a main part and two additional
boxes, one of which explains the course of the battle
in September, 9 AD, as I have reconstructed it on the
basis of the report of Roman historian Cassius Dio.
The second box is about dispute over the locality –
which continues to rage, despite the overwhelming evidence
in favor of Kalkriese. A map is attached to the article;
it was to appear in the original, but was left out.

In addition, I have attached the
original, longer text on the course of the battle, which
the TAZ had to shorten for reasons of space.
